The curse of the obligation to provide proof - taming supply chains digitally

adesso Digital Day 2024 presentation by Jonas Rothe

The challenge of the obligation to provide proof of conformity in the supply chain - insights and solutions

In today's globalized and highly regulated business world, the obligation to provide proof of conformity is becoming an increasingly complex task. This was impressively demonstrated in a recent presentation by my colleague Jonas Rothe, an expert at material.one AG. The presentation shed light on how regulatory requirements are forcing companies to look deep into their supply chains and ensure transparency at all levels.

Jonas illustrated the challenges with a personal anecdote: on a vacation trip to the Ziller Valley in Tyrol, Austria he unexpectedly got caught in thick fog which severely restricted his view of the road. Companies that know their direct suppliers but have little insight into the deeper levels of their supply chains face a similar situation. This is where the obligation to provide evidence of conformity comes into play; requiring transparency and data management across the entire production process.

But that's not all. The flood of data that is generated is often unstructured and difficult to manage. Data security also plays a decisive role here. How secure are read-only files that are sent by email? And how can it be ensured that the data collected by the various participants and levels of the supply chain remains reliable and unchanged?

The presentation discussed various approaches and technologies that can help to manage this "multi-tier supply chain transparency". Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of effective data management in approval and evidence processes before the start of series production and the correct connection of all systems involved to ensure the necessary transparency and security.
