Material Compliance: Digitally document environmental and sustainability requirements

From substance data management to due diligence—all documentation in one place.

Material compliance refers to the demonstration that the materials and substances used in a product meet applicable legal and regulatory requirements—ranging from substance data management in the IMDS (International Material Data System) to the upcoming digital product passport, as well as documentation of recycled content, carbon footprint, and due diligence obligations in the supply chain. For manufacturers and suppliers in regulated industries, this is no longer a minor issue: Regulations such as the Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG) and the upcoming European CSDDD increasingly require complete, verifiable documentation throughout the entire supply chain—not only from direct suppliers but also from their upstream suppliers.

At the same time, technical standards continue to evolve, for example with the integration of VDA 231-300 into DIN SPEC 91383 and the collaboration between material.one, DIN, DKE, and the Initiative for Digital Standards (IDiS) to make material data and documentation increasingly machine-readable and usable across system boundaries.

Anyone who still meets these requirements today using individual documents and manual data entry in IMDS wastes time and risks gaps in the chain of evidence. Instead, material.one consolidates material data, supporting documentation, and test results in one place, making them available to manufacturers, suppliers, and testing laboratories alike.
